Cocktail Ingredients
Here are some great liquor/liqueur suggestions I like. Cheers to finding new favorite drinks and places to elevate your own cocktail adventures!
Suntory Plum Liqueur (Whisky Blend)
One of my favorite light liqueurs is plum liqueur, known as umeshu in Japan! During my whisky tour at the Suntory Yamazaki Distillery, I couldn’t resist grabbing a bottle from their souvenir shop—and it did not disappoint. While I’ve tried the generic plum liqueur sold on the West Coast of the U.S., I still prefer the bold, satisfying flavors of Japanese umeshu.
The Suntory version is sweet, rich, and best enjoyed straight over an ice cube. If you’re in Japan and love sweet, fruity flavors, I highly recommend picking up a bottle!
Komasa Sakurajima Komikan Gin
I don’t usually drink hard liquor straight, but the smoothness of this mandarin and herb-infused spirit surprised me! Its bright, citrus-forward flavor shines, making it perfect for cocktails like a Gin & Tonic.
I bought mine in Japan, but you can also find it in the U.S. at retailers like Total Wine or online.
Suntory Yamazaki Single Malt Whisky
Experience a fantastic single malt whisky from Japan's oldest distillery, aged in red wine and sherry casks. This fruity whisky delights with notes of red berry, aromatic spices, and light oak. For the best experience, enjoy it neat—though you can always get creative with cocktails!
I purchased mine in Japan, but you can also find it in the U.S. at retailers like Total Wine or online.
Iichiko Silhouette Shochu
If you haven’t tried Iichiko shochu yet, I highly recommend it! Unlike sake, which is more known outside Japan, shochu is a distilled liquor with a higher alcohol content and can be made from ingredients like sweet potatoes, barley, and even chestnuts.
Shochu is typically distilled once in a pot still, while vodka undergoes multiple distillations. What sets Iichiko apart is its lack of sweeteners or additives, yet it still boasts a delicious umami flavor thanks to the use of koji.
Where to buy: You can find Iichiko shochu online from their website or at major liquor stores in the U.S.
Frangelico Hazelnut Liqueur
Do you love the rich flavor of hazelnut? If so, you’ll find Frangelico liqueur to be absolutely perfect! I picked up a bottle out of curiosity and was pleasantly surprised by its intense sweetness, complemented by hints of coffee, chocolate, and vanilla.
Enjoy it like a dessert wine, sipping it alongside your favorite treats, or use it to elevate any cocktail experience!
Where to buy: You can find Frangelico at major liquor stores in the U.S., including Total Wine.
